Manager
Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000
Scope of Responsibility:
The development manager is responsible
for all aspects of raising support from foundations and individual donors for
the IFGs varied and active program work. This position works with the
director of operations and executive director to set foundation income goals
for the annual budget and is responsible for developing a comprehensive plan
for raising the income during the year. Responsibilities include researching
and cultivating foundation and high donor prospects, writing and tracking foundation
grant proposals, assisting in developing project budgets, and generating grant
reports.
Specific Responsibilities:
Grantwriting/Proposals:
- Oversee writing and editing grant proposals;
- Maintain tracking system for funding proposal and
reporting deadlines.
- Track all phases of a grant proposal. Ensure that
comprehensive files are kept for all outgoing proposals. Follow-up on proposals
on a timely basis, acknowledge receipt of proposals by funder, maintain follow-up
and follow-up schedules for appropriate IFG staff, track grant report due
dates, and write grant reports on a timely basis.
- Elicit periodic reports from program staff to incorporate
into proposals.
- Initiate final funding reports.
ResearchNew Funding/Foundations/Individuals:
- Research new prospective funders for each IFG program (both new and ongoing)ascertain
guidelines and proposal deadlines, research if the IFG knows any staff or
board members, etc.
- Follow-up potential new foundation leaders (e.g., often IFG executive staff
meets new people at EGA and other similar meetings), or review funding of
similar organizations, their funding sources and potential for the IFG.
Fundraising Events:
- Assist in coordinating an IFG 10-year anniversary event (for 2004).
- Coordinate potential funder/funder events as appropriate.
Development Database:
- Help to develop a funder data base that will accurately track gifts, proposal
and grant report deadlines, all mailings, contact information, etc.
- Develop reports such as: 1) Weekly status reports on outstanding proposals/inquiries;
2) Tickler report for proposal deadlines; 3) Tickler report for grant report
deadlines.
- Ensure that funding information is kept current in the IFG database.
Other Development Projects:
- Develop and implement annual fundraising appeal and other appeals as appropriate
during the year.
- Develop a comprehensive program to cultivate individual high donors.
- Issue and develop appropriate communications/mailings with the funding
community (e.g., direct mailings of IFG publications, etc.).
- Maintain development budget.
Requirements:
- Excellent grant proposal writing and editing skills (prefer familiarity
with Chicago Manual of Style and AP style editing/copy editing). Ability to
create effective, persuasive grant proposals.
- Proven successful experience in producing income of $1,000,000+ from foundations.
- Good verbal and written communication skills to act as liaison with high
donors and funding community in developing and sustaining relationships.
- Previous experience researching and cultivating prospective new funders
and matching foundation areas of giving with appropriate programs.
- Ability to be flexible and respond to ever changing development and organizational
needs while also maintaining an organized program.
- Knowledge of basic budgetary and financial reportingability to create
and maintain a budget, ability to interpret organizational budgets as appropriate
for funder proposals, reports, etc.
- Good decision-making, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
- Supervise a part-time development assistant.
